This is Day 9 of the 21-Day Positivity Challenge held in March 2012, where we work on being positive for 21 days. The challenge is now over but you can do the tasks in your own time. Visit the overview page for all the tasks.
21DPC Day 9 Question
Today’s positivity question is:
Who Inspires You? And Why?
(For those with Live a Better Life in 30 Days, check out Day 18: Evaluate Your Relationships for further reading.)
Your Task:
- Reflect and answer today’s question(s). Write as few or as many words as needed to fully express yourself.
- Embody the qualities you admire in the person. Today, make a special effort to embody those qualities which you admire in the person you stated in #1. For example, if Person A inspires you because of his/her genuinity, then embody genuinity 110%, in your every thought and action, today. Continue to do that for the rest of 21DPC.
- Identify at least one positive thing about your day. It may be something small or something big – as long as you deem it as something positive, it counts. If you have more than 1 thing to share, then by all means, go for it!
Share Your Answers!
After you are done, share your answers in the comments area.
If you’re doing this at the start of the day, you can post your answer for today’s question first, then work on your positivity task throughout the day, then return at the end of the day to share your results for your positivity task and your end-of-day positive reflection.
Check out other participants’ answers. Pick 1-2 participants’ answers and make a meaningful reply to them. Engage in the discussions. This is a group course, so let’s support each other in these 21 days!
Look forward to reading your responses!

My Husband – He is fully charged with positivity thoughts, looks a positive aspect even in tough times. He is kind to all the persons and hence he is liked by all the people who ever he meets. He is so funny and makes other people happy too :)
So this inspired me a lottt .. :)
Positive for the day :
Since it was weekend for us, had great time with friends ..:) that was great…:)
I am inspired by my husband, who is extremely supportive of me, extremely caring and never fails to prove how much I mean to him every day. He always makes me feel special, and I love spending time with him.
I am also inspired by my old manager, who taught me everything I know about my career and is in many ways, a very good friend to me. She always looks out for me even though I am now in a different city, and she inspires me to be a better manager myself.
Today I was conducting interviews at work, and kept my old manager’s advice in the back of my head while looking for a suitable candidate to join our team. I also spent some time this evening making dinner with my husband – I love cooking together. :)
Positive Things today:
-another home-cooked meal that saved us money and was delicious!
-woke up to snow covering the ground this morning – so pretty!
My friend Mary. She’s always there for everyone who needs her, yet finds time to do the things she loves to do. As for good things, I got paid.
I started to write about people I know who have courage and compassion and who have overcome a lot of obstacles. But I’m dealing with a lot of stressors right now and what I really feel inspired by is people who have fun.
So instead I’m going to admit that I am most inspired by this guy from the cleaning service. He is my son’s age, and he has a good attitude about the work he’s doing, his sense of humor matches mine, and we work well together. When he is helping, I actually enjoy cleaning out the attic or the basement and other tedious chores.
It also helps that he takes care of a lot of routine drudgery for me.
My youngest sister has a delightful sense of humor. I just talked to her. We make each other laugh. We help each other a lot, because one of us often knows something that the other one needs to know, but also because of seeing the bright side or the lighter side of a situation.
I’m embodying the characteristic of “fun” today by telling my husband about some absurd things to make him laugh. It’s one of the things I do to support his health. “A merry heart does good like a medicine”.
Positivity today: I had fun conversations by phone with my sister and with the cleaner when I called about rescheduling him. The doctors keep saying how well my husband (and I) have been handling his ongoing health problems.
Actually, today I inspired myself!! Every day, I wake up and decide on a theme for the day, like love, or treating myself well, or being kind. Today I chose ‘everything in its time’, because I’ve been getting so ahead of my thoughts, and feeling overwhelmed with new work responsibilities. All through the day, I felt like the centerboard keel was in place, helping keep me steady through deep water.
Choosing a theme for the day helps me to stay focused on my missions; both my mission to God, and my career mission. They’re related, of course, which is the reason that one theme suffices for the whole day!
As a result of today’s mission, I feel ‘relaxed with pep’ – and now I get to enjoy pizza and movie night with my 2 youngest kids! Can I continue to have this theme every day for the next 21 days? It’s a challenge within a challenge! I accept – we’ll see how I do!
Today’s positive note: I got a tremendous endorsement from a new colleague: ‘It’s hard, and part of the reason we want you to do it is that you’re smart enough to ask the dumb questions.’
The person who inspires me is my boyfriend. He has so many amazing qualities but if I had to choose my top three, they would be his discipline, passion for his work, and dependability. He has been self-employed for almost a decade and has loved doing what he does and has demonstrated an amazing discipline to pursue his passion and grow his business. He is one of the most good-hearted and genuine people I know, when he says he will do something or commits to something, he will do it.
Something positive about my day is that I went running with the guys at the beach yesterday and I was able to run over five miles which is an improvement from three miles the week before. I was “almost” able to keep up with their speed but I can definitely feel the improvement compared to the first run. It feels great!
My mom inspires me, she is a really impressive woman who is wise and at the same time knows what’s best for us the daughters. If it’s not for her, we would not have been able to achieve what we have today.
A friend who works really hard to achieve his goals inspires me. He knows what he likes and what he wants and work really hard for it.
People who have gone through hardships and traumas in lives and yet survive and prove humans’ impertinence inspire me.
Positive things for the day:
New T-shirt!
Found my friend’s lost thumb drive (I simply enjoy helping people at all costs, despite inconveniences)
Couldn’t agree with you more… I love the qualities that inspire you…
Mum inspires me because of who she is, strong and dedicated person.
Positive today, feel the vibe between me and someone. Was a good feeling like in the clouds
One person from history that really inspires me is Princess Diana. She embodies all I want to be as a person. She gives selflessly despite all her personal problems. She’s just a classic beauty with compassion for the people. She wanted to make a difference and that she did.
A positive thing about my day – a lovely 2 hour moonlit hike with a touch of adventure – trying to climb up a loose dirt hill with my hiking group lol.. then having to slide down on my butt and getting a splinter. haha! It was too fun! :)
I find that a lot of people inspire me for different reasons. I get a lot of inspiration from my closest friends. My friend who I wrote about on day 2 inspires me to enjoy my life more, relax, socialise, come out of my shell, because they really give attention to everyone they speak to and are so warm and relaxed with other people’s company. Right now my flatmate inspires me too because she is vegan and I am in awe of how dedicated she is to eating healthily and making healthy choices in life, and for sticking to her morals/ethics when culturally and socially it is expected to eat meat and dairy. I am inspired by her to live a healthier life and I have been making changes ever since I met her to make healthier life choices. Today I baked vegan cookies (my first attempt at vegan baking!) and I went to the gym for the first time in my life! I am also trying to reduce the amount of sugar I eat and snack more healthily.
Positive things for today: there have been so many, and the last few days I have felt so much happier, I think this positivity challenge is really working!!! My new sport shoes arrived (exciting, because I can begin my first steps to being fitter!!!), I joined a gym, I went to a spinning class and stuck at it (even though I wasn’t very good as I am really unfit right now!), my work was easy, I tried some new recipes and enjoyed eating healthily, and I spoke to my mum and brother on Skype.
According to my Facebook, I’m inspired by “co-operative people” and “people who want to make a difference”. Very vague and can include both famous worldchangers and local activists :)
I was co-operative today by being quiet at the start of a lecture. Something I take for granted. I don’t understand why people keep talking if they voluntarily dragged themselves to listen to this lecture!
As for wanting to make a difference, I read a bunch of articles, which probably helps. Also did a short experiment for one of our lecturers.
Positive today: both lectures were brilliant, as usual. Watched part of a documentary about emotions, mainly disgust (babies will smell and eat anything; kids the age of 3 won’t but will still drink juice that recently had a cockroach in it (ewwwwww!!); adults can even get disgusted at ideas – in this case a piece of Nazi clothing). Memory lecture focused on encoding, recall and recognition – the environment where encoding and retrieval take place are important; also distinctiveness and depth (how much meaning you can attach to that piece of information); cues (who were you with, etc) are extremely helpful for recall but can trigger false memories (how much can we trust eyewitness testimony??)
Hi JadePenguin :) I would disagree with Facebook… As it is a social media machine that thrives on stealing marketing information to sell consumer products and place advertisements… But I digress! Based on your positive thing of the day, it looks like you are inspired by education :)
Ohh, that was something I wrote on my profile myself. But yes, it constantly keeps throwing all sorts of “spiritual” and “philosophical” adverts at me. Luckily only on the sidebar, so it’s mostly ignorable!
Yes, education inspires me just as much. I’ve had some lovely teachers in my life and I’m hoping to offer the same kind of guidance to a new generation someday :)
Music inspires me in every way imaginable :) I am more fired up about life, I go print out the music sheet if I can find it and play it on my violin, it makes me happy and brings me out of a depressed/angry mood if I am in one, and it comforts me to sleep.
Something positive today: …I relaxed when I got home ^^
Who inspires me and why? My Great Aunt Monica passed away this week. She was 83. I wasn’t as close to her as I would have liked to have been, but I do have great memories of her, as do the rest of my family. After reading her obituary, I got to know who she was a little bit better, and right now, she is the most inspiring woman to me.
She was a very successful woman, holding a management job in the 60s (which was unheard of back then). She was a very loving, caring person. She stood up for her beliefs, from politics to religion. She loved her family so much and adored spending time with all of them. She had this amazing sense of humor, which is ultimately what got her through dealing with having Alzheimer’s disease. She was well known in the neighborhood she lived in, befriending everyone, and all the kids knew her as the “freeze-pop grandma”. She would hand out freeze pops to all the kids during the summer. She bonded with them all, and everyone loved her. She was the type of person to practice random acts of kindness, and I adore that the most about her.
From now on, I am going to embrace her kind of generosity, love and kindness. When I die, I want my obituary to read just like hers did…it was probably the happiest obituary I’ve ever read. I want people to remember me the way they remember her.
My husband is also VERY inspiring to me. He loves me unconditionally and lets me be the person that I am, flaws and all. He is so accepting of others. He is very hard working and determined. He is smart, and he’s not afraid of new adventures. That’s probably one of the things I love most about it, because I have taken him on some pretty crazy adventures, and he has stuck by me through all of them!
I will always love him the same way he loves me. I will always be by his side. He has made me such a better person, he has ALWAYS inspired me.
One positive thing about my day: My husband and I are going to a concert tonight to see one of our favorite bands! We don’t get out much, so this is going to be a lot of fun! We are both very excited for it!
They are not flaws unless you are labeling it as a flaw.
My dear friend, she went through many hardships and still she shines and believe in love. I feel instantly better every time I read her.
And my husband too. He always think about new ideas, he never gives up even when life is too heavy. He helps me to be a better person, to improve a lot.
As for a nice thing for today:
My husband call in the morning, his work takes him away and hearing his voice before he leaves is a special treat.
A fabulous week-end to all.
Who Inspires You? And Why?
– I continue to be inspired by Steve Irwin, even though he died several years ago. Sure, he and his TV shows were pretty over the top, but the message I always got from him was one of genuine wonder and compassion for the natural world. He wrestled huge crocodiles to relocate them to safer places, he cried over an orphaned elephant calf who died without her mother, smiled wryly when a nearby monitor lizard slapped him in the face with its tail, and he worked tirelessly to keep these animals and their habitats safe through conservation and education.
Embody the qualities you admire in the person.
– I want to do everything I can to help animals and share that enthusiasm with others. I want to make people stop and look at an animal – ordinary or exotic – and think, “Wow, this is an amazing being with its own life, its own needs, and its own emotions. And I value that life.”
Identify at least one positive thing about your day.
– I read an article about an amazing puppy named Harper who was rescued from a trash bag last fall, then almost euthanized because of a deformity that prevented her from walking. Just look at her a month later! http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/44617504#.T1pntjHClt1 I can’t help but smile when I see that happy little face. :)
Great authors inspire me because writing is my passion. There are too many to name, but I especially admire those that had the courage to write unconventional thoughts, and publish them for the rest of us to ponder.
A positive thing about today is that I went to the fitness center and totally lost track of time. I was “in the zone” and time flew by.
The one person who inspires me is the woman I work with. She has such personal discipline and achieves many of the goals that she sets for herself, both personal and in business. Her manner with individuals is patient and understanding. She is the reason why I love my job…she is fair, non-judgemental, understanding and has taught me many things that make my work tasks flow smoothly with very few hiccups!
Postive today is that it is another beautiful day, all the flowers are beginning to bloom and it’s Friday!
This is another easy one to answer. There are two people. One of course is my father, who inspired me to be who I need to be when it comes to work so that I can be the family man. I don’t think I have failed at all in this area.
But the second person that inspires “me” everyday right now is my best friend. She has inspired me on how to be myself. No a husband, not an employee, but to be who I am inside.
When I first met her and started to get to know her, I just could not believe what a good heart she had right from the beginning. She was a co-worker and as usual we start off by talking about family. One of the first things that I was so impressed was the fact that she took in her nephews to raise as her own. Now maybe it’s the fact that I don’t have kids, and at the time I didn’t have a nephew either, but at the time I could not image doing anything like that. She already had a daughter, and to take in more to her family, without batting her eyes, I was just amazed. Again at the time I was not mature as I am now. Money that I earned was for stupid things, but back then, I didn’t know any better. I was young and dumb.
As the time went by, her honesty was another thing that inspired me. I didn’t know it back then, but she didn’t judge me back then either. I feel bad about it now, but there were times that our boss made my career miserable. And I know I took it out on her. She even remembered a comment I made to her and her sister-in-law, that I still cannot believe I made. She remembers it was in a joking manner, but I can see now immature I was back then. But guess what. She almost 10 years later, she still lets me be her best friend.
She is so smart, and extremely resourceful in whatever it is. She has gone through so much in life, and put a lot of her dreams on hold or even stopped dreaming for a while. The one thing I regret so much is that we lost contact for such a long time. But since we have reconnected, it’s now my mission in life to put those dreams back into motion, do whatever it takes, while still maintaining my values, to help her reach her dreams, and be there if she needs help coming up with new dreams.
She is an amazing person, a daughter, a mother, a wife that hundreds if not thousands of men dream of having, and I am lucky to be her friend. Oh on top of all this, she is also beautiful. Thousands of women are so jealous about that, because she sets the bar higher for them all the time.
I know she is reading this and thinking I’m giving her a big head, or whatever. But it’s the honest truth. I would not lie. There is no sense in arguing the truth.
Positive thing for today. I got a really bad bloody nose and I didn’t get any blood on my shirt. Not sure if that is really positive, but happy about it. I will see how tonight goes with the talk with my wife. I hope I don’t get a bloody nose from her hitting me or something like that.
I am very inspired by Angelina Jolie. I guess I resonate with her being a little strange and doing very crazy things in her youth, but still demonstrating that she is a good person who gives love and seeks to make a difference in the world. She carries herself with dignity and yet vulnerability, and I am in awe of her success and the way she has been able to give back on a grand scale.
I would *love* to spend the day channeling this energy. In fact, that’s one of my favorite things to do–to channel energy of people I admire. Kind of like acting and exploring different parts of yourself in the moment. This will be fun!
Good things that have happened to me today: Kind and supportive emails, a newsletter signup, and an opening in my schedule!
When I sat down to review my values and goals at the beginning of the year, one of the things I put on my list was to try to inspire others to be the best person they can be, to grow and to work towards their goals. I decided I should start with myself. I haven’t had a lot of people who have provided inspiration to me the past few years, and as a replacement for the negative people in my life (who I’m trying to spend less time around!), I started reading and listening to books more. I keep a book on my nightstand and try to read a little bit every night. I pick out audio books that help me grow as a person, or have an inspiring story, and listen to them on the way to and from work. It helps me start and end my work day on a positive note. Many of these authors have sparked something inside of me that makes me want to do something great (I just finished listening to The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly).
But the constant inspiration I have in my life right now is my best friend. No matter how bad I’m feeling, he always reminds me of the good things about myself. He keeps pushing me so I don’t give up. He reminds me of all of the things I’ve accomplished so far this year. He remembers what I’ve done more than I do! So for the rest of the 21DPC I’m going to try to be like him and notice all of the good things about others and make a conscious effort to notice and praise others for their accomplishments.
Positive things for today: I’m feeling much better today! The sun is shining. It’s Friday.
Yeah I love this task. Every chance I get to talk about the people who inspire me I exploit to the full. Some of the names might be foreign to you but just note that I’m South African.
1) Donald Trump: This great man is one of the people who inspire me greatest he really is number one on my list. The reason is that I love the way he’s a “go-getter”, witty and straight to the point. He works exceptionally hard, takes great pride in himself and is really different from other industry leaders and mostly he loves what he does.
2) Gareth Cliff: has a high sense of confidence, it would/ IS really hard to bring him down. All SA’s know. He stands up for what he believes and not easily persuaded. He is very knowledgeable and talks with great insight. One of the things that stand out is that he has no respect for the status quo and most importantly, he lives life according to the way he feels, not a life he is deemed to live according to his fans and does not take himself seriously.
3) Dj Fresh (SA): One of my dreams this year is to meet him and go to one of his events. he is truly the embodiment of Hard work and one of the lessons I learnt from him is that one should really be doing what one loves. He respects peoples opinions even though he does not agree, spontaneous lives on the edge and is a mater in his chosen field. He is also one that does not live according to the expectations of others.
4) Anele Mdoda: She is extremely witty, controversial and is really out there. she is one of those people who are also thick skinned. And she’s quite fierce. You mess with her and she will surely come after you.
5) Ivanka Trump: She is smart, eloquent and polite. She has a great personality. Given the success she has attained at her age, one has to admire the fact that she is still grounded. She also has a presence.
6) Barbara Masuku: She was someone who always used to remind me: by any means necessary. She was pro hard work and ensuring that one gives only the best of themselves. She used to tell me:
a) To ensure that I look out for myself and give and associate myself with only the best.
b) Never to lower my standards for anything
c) Never to form part of the crowd
e) raise the stakes for myself
f) Go after what I love
What a great way to remind me of my goals.
I dont know what or who inspires me the most, but somehow I get new ideas from what I see and what I hear all the time. One thing is for sure, I sometimes have too many ideas. Its very tricky to pick out the the good once and storage the rest.
possitive today, I went to lunch with a good friend :-) had sushi my favorite and the sun was shining !
life is good :D
The one person who inspires me is my friend ML, who died of cancer end of January.
She’s the most strong, positive-minded, determined and courageous person I know. When she was diagnosed of cancer , she faced the illness with courage, reading and researching and following the doctor’s treatments. She made incredible recovery physically at first, but her health started declining again, and after 16 months , the doctors told her that the treatments (chemo, radiotherapy etc) were not having any effect and the cancer had spread more. She then decided to give up treatment and the idea of recovery. She was not negative, but rather put the little energy she had into planning her death – the church ceremony, the clothes she would wear, her makeup, the songs to be played and the testimonials.
The main qualities she embodies for me is strength and determination – I did not really have any occasion to embody these today. It’s been a relatively easy day for me.
Positive action: I’ve been catching up with the exercises in the challenge and reading the forums.
Wow, your friend sounds like she had real strength of character. I’m really sorry that you lost a friend, and I’m glad that you can remember her in such a positive and inspiring way. I think it was really admirable for you to write about her today and share her story.
I am inspired by John Keating, the English teacher in the film Dead Poets Society. I like how he believes in life and in his students. I like how he trusts his students for them to find their very own interests. I think he inspires me disobedience and courage as good ways to learn to love life. The positive today? The computer in front of me and the web, which enable me to connect with a lot of people all around the world.
My kids inspire me! I know I wasn’t the best mom but I did the best I could with what I had. I broke the cycle of alcohol and drug abuse that ran in my family. I’m what most would consider the “white sheep” in the family.
I was the first one to graduate on my mom’s side of the family and my kids are the first grandkids to graduate (my mom & sister didn’t graduate and her kids are both dropouts).
My son was recently laid off from his job but is concentrating in his music for the band he is in. My daughter is serving our country in the Navy, I miss our Sunday movies and lunches together.
My kids inspire me everyday to be a better role model and to show them I Love them unconditionally!
Today is a Great day…the sunshine is out, I am alive, I am Thankful for all I am and have and I have wonderful kids, boyfriend and friends!
 Hugs everyone! to a Beautiful day!
And I’m inspired by your story and how much you love your kids! Hope you had a great day xx
Who Inspires You? And Why?
I am currently very inspired by the author Ken Wilber. His comprehensive work of nearly everything amazes me. His work covers all fields in the ‘Kosmos’, including philosophy, spirituality, psychology, science, art, and many more. These different fields are pieced together in a seamless and intriguing fashion in what he calls ‘integral’. In essence, he believes that every field has its own value and some truth in it. But sometimes, 2 fields will clash due to their differences and oppose each other. A common example will be science and religion. What Ken Wilber attempts to do is to reconcile different fields, including opposing ones, together by suggesting that opposing fields are true to a certain extent and only accurately explain a certain domain of reality (or ‘quadrant’ as he terms it). This is only the tip of the iceberg and the explanation gets more in-depth after that. From there, he comes out with the AQAL model. You guys can check out Wikipedia to see what it means. ;)
Identify at least one positive thing about your day.
Did my guilty pleasure by playing 3 hours of WoW today. Realized that the clear goals with rewards, instant feedback, surprise rewards and the positive feelings of productivity (you can complete quests, get loots, earn gold, points and reputation all at the same time if you play the heroic dungeons) are what that keeps me playing.
Forgot about the embodying question.
Perhaps I can embody his intelligence? Continue reading, writing, and doing the things that improve my intelligence. Actually I am starting and will be devoting more time to do a thorough study of his work. His magnum opus ‘Sex, Ecology, Spirituality’ can be a mind-numbing read by itself, with tons of ideas condensed in every paragraph of the book.
Who Inspires You? And Why?
Both my parents always inspire me a lot. My father’s family is a typical old fashion family, which men are free from doing house chores, women do all of them. Men are the person to make all the decision and women don’t have the chance to object. My mum had to work to support the whole family, and after she came back from work, she had to do house chores too. She took care of my grandmother and my father very well. No matter how much my grandmother scolded her, she still stayed strong and I rarely saw her get angry with my grandmother. She didn’t fight back, but just kept quiet. My father is a bad tempered person, my mum can always stand with his temper and calm him down.
My father, he used to be a bad temper, but the way he does things are very systematic and organized. He plans carefully for all the things to be done and he is always an excellent person in my heart. Now, he always try to control his temper, and his temper is getting better and better now. :) Also, my father is a filial person. Although his bad temper does let my grandmother down sometimes, but when he reflects back about his fault, he is always the person to apologize to my grandmother. Whenever he does something, he always thinks of my grandmother in the first place.
Embody the qualities you admire in the person.
I’m raised in a traditional family, so I always follow my mother in doing some house chores. I’m trying to learn cooking although I have no interest in it. My mindset is that: A woman must know how to cook. And I believe that a woman that knows cooking is definitely an advantage to herself.
I changed to be bad temper when I worked in the industrial field, which I fought with people everyday to make things done. Because of that, I felt tired of myself as all the bad moods come in. Now I’m learning to calm down my temper whenever I meet unpleasant incidents. I always reflect back myself every quarter of the year, to see how far I have achieved, and how much I can improve. :)

Today, I asked my students to create a simple game in a web page. I saw them managed to make it and they played the game happily. I hope the same will go to the other class in the coming Monday. :)
During the evening, I went for a walk with my mum, and we met the aunty of the grocery shop. 3 of us walked together and we enjoyed the walk for more than one hour. ^^

For me, I don’t think it’s one particular person. It’s usually those that have overcome some great odds to accomplish their goals. Lately, I have tried to watch how people just let things roll off them and not swell on them. This is very hard for me to do.
I will have to comment on my positive thing later today….just can’t think of anything at the moment.
Who inspires me and why?
Well first of all Gautama Buddha inspires me a lot. I am into spirituality for quite a long time now. There are hard times, ups and downs in your journey but the wisdom and the preaching of Buddha helps me a lot to overcome it. For some days I had been off from my daily meditation practice (Vipassana) but now I have started it again. THANKS TO 21DPC AND CELES.
Secondly, I respect Mahatma Gandhi and he is a great inspiration for me. His honesty, love for truth and non-violence makes me to respect and look up to him  . I am reading his autobiography “My experiments with truth”. It’s a great read, I can tell. But in India I don’t know  why some people don’t like him. I think everyone must read his autobiography before making any preconception. I have the eBook and I can send it if anyone wants.
My Positive thing of the day:
Finally I am over with my one sided love  . Today talked to her. I blurted out everything in front of her (was honest about my feelings) but even then she rejected, but hey! it’s okay! Because now I am free and I can move on finally :p . All the restless nights are over. And I don’t know why it is as such but I am feeling very light. .
Buddha is one of my great inspirations too! I meditated today and it was very blissful :)
