21DPC Day 4 Question

Today’s positivity question is:

What Is Your Favorite Movie? And Why?

Cinema

While we’re on the topic of movies, check out the following PE articles on inspiring movies:

Your Task:

  1. Reflect and answer today’s question(s). Write as few or as many words as needed to fully express yourself.
  2. Share your favorite movie with someone.
    • Think of someone in your life who may enjoy (or even benefit from) this movie.
    • Now, share this movie with him/her, whether by way of a verbal recommendation, by lending him/her your DVD/VCD (if you have it), by buying a copy for him/her (if you want to), or even inviting him/her over to watch the movie together in the upcoming weekend.
    • The point of this is to share the love and joy you’ve experienced from this movie with someone else. He/she may well be inspired by it in the same way as you have.
  3. Identify at least one positive thing about your day. It may be something small or something big – as long as you deem it as something positive, it counts. If you have more than 1 thing to share, then by all means, go for it!

Share Your Answers!

After you are done, share your answers in the comments area!

If you’re doing this at the start of the day, you can post your answer for today’s question first, then work on your positivity task throughout the day, then return at the end of the day to share your results for your positivity task and your end-of-day positive reflection.

Check out other participants’ answers. Pick 1-2 participants’ answers and make a meaningful reply to them. Engage in the discussions. This is a group course, so let’s support each other in these 21 days!

Look forward to reading your responses!

  1. hi everyone, my favorite movie is ‘Titanic’ .i love this movie. after 15 years it is so fresh & heart touching.i like its graphics,in movie its old & new time combination.water scenes.last scenes of sunk ship…its simply awesome.

  2. Oh, I have many “favourite” movies … not just one!

Across The Universe, Cabaret, O’ Brother Where Art Thou?, Pulp Fiction, Snow Cake, Snow Falling On Cedares, The Commitments, The Gods Must Be Crazy, The Sixth Sense, War of the Buttons and 9 1/2 Weeks (to name a few). All are entertaining, and resonate for various reasons … music, humour, artistic presentation, story, etc.

Had a wonderful and positive day at home in pajamas … talked on the phone with some loved ones, made a huge pot of borscht soup, did housework (love my home when its clean!), laundry and crafting … it was a feel-good day!

SO MANY ANSWERS! Honestly, I don’t even know where to begin, so here’s a list. In no particular order.

The Last Unicorn because it’s beautiful and epic and an amazing adaptation of the book.
Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy because of the same reasons as above.
The Dark Crystal because Brian Froud and Jim Henson are gods and the most amazing storytellers.
Anything by Miyazaki. ANYTHING. Look him up if you don’t know who he is. The man is a genius.
The Little Prince because again, amazing adaptation of the book and Gene Wilder is the perfect fox.
All Don Bluth movies. Nothing says “childhood” like Don Bluth.

And oh so many more than I’m going to kick myself for later for not remembering.

Something positive: A few weeks ago, I won weekend passes to STAPLE!, a indie comic convention here in Austin. I’ve been before so I was excited to go again. This time, for one main reason: KEVIN EASTMAN. That’s right. You heard me. Kevin Eastman, creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was going to be there. And he was! And he did not disappoint! I dragged Ash to his Q&A which was awesome, and then made her stand in line with me afterward so I could get my TMNT issue signed. Not only did he sign it, but he also sketched a turtle on it, AND was gracious enough to take a picture with me. After I announced to him that when I was eight years old I dressed as Mikey for Halloween.

I didn’t tell him that I had turtle sheets when I was younger. That might have been embarrassing. In any case, I got to meet and hug Kevin Eastman today. I’m going to be hard-pressed to find anything more positive and awesome the rest of this month.

    • So cool that you got to meet him! My favorite Turtle has always been Donatello. :)

  4. What Is Your Favorite Movie? And Why?
    – “The Last Unicorn” has pretty much been my favorite movie since I was 3 or 4 years old. There are a lot of reasons why I love it, and those reasons have evolved over time. Of course, I’ve always loved it because it’s about a unicorn. Duh. :) I adore the beauty of the animation and the backgrounds, as well as the interesting and unique characters and the way they develop through the story. The story and characters are a lot more complex than what you’ll find in most childrens movies, which is probably why I still love it so much. In fact, I think I’m going to have to watch it again very soon… :)

I’m trying to think of who I could share this with, as most people who know me have already heard me gush about it… I’ve asked friend on Facebook if she’s seen it.

Identify at least one positive thing about your day.
    – I got to teach yoga! I always love teaching yoga, and we had a nice class out in the sun today. :) I even got to bring one of my dogs, Azu, along.

    • Nikki Jeske 13 years ago

Yes, the Last Unicorn! That’s first on my list too! :D

      • Haha, I was wondering if that would be your answer as well!

  5. Cheri Lalwani 13 years ago

I don’t have any one personal favorite but i like animated films because they take you into a completely different world.
Some of my favs are Avatar, Madagascar, Finding Nemo, How to train a dragon , Monsters :)
Few others are Inception, Social Network, The Departed, Notebook, Serendipity, 50 first dates, Blind side

  6. Remember the Titans. (See: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0210945/)

This movie had a huge impression on me as a kid so its always been a favorite. I love the excitement, humor and great story. But even better is the message. About overcoming differences, and looking past what or even who we think people are and really getting to know what’s inside.

Positive: It stopped raining today, and although its windy and chilly, its a beautiful sunny day outside :)

  7. I had to have a think about this one because I have a lot of movies that I enjoy but I couldn’t think of just one… but finally I decided on Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

It’s a film I enjoyed so much as a kid but there is still so much enjoyment that can come from watching this movie. Here’s what I love about it:

It reminds me of my childhood, closeness with my sisters and my granddad – I remember us watching it together and laughing at the silly bits together.

I love that Ariel is a dreamer, and I love how kind Flounder and Sebastian are… they support Ariel even when she makes a decision they don’t agree with to go up to the human world. They do everything they can to help her out.

Ursula is the best villain, flanked by Flotsam and Jetsam, the evil eels.

Ariel’s father has to learn to let her go and stop protecting her. Ariel is strong and intelligent.

I love the songs too! And some of the funny bits still make me laugh!

And I have always been fascinated by The Little Mermaid story by Hans Christian Andersen. Disney makes the ending happy, and makes the story jolly, but that’s what has helped to make this film one of my all-time favourites!

And the positive things for today: it was sunny, I wore some shiny pink high heels and dressed in spring colours, I tried out some new recipes and I caught up with some good friends :)

It’s difficult to pick my favorite movie but for the purpose of this challenge, I’ll choose to discuss one that definitely tops the list- Chocolat. I enjoy this movie because the main character, Vianne, has many characteristics that I admire. She is independent, passionate and kind without compromising herself. She also is forced to endure persecution in the town where she opens a chocolate shop during Lent. Vianne and her daughter are criticized by the people in the town, whose own secrets are slowly revealed throughout the movie. Similar prejudice toward pirates who arrive in the town turns violent, and ultimately everyone learns a lesson in tolerance. One of my favorite quotes in the movie says it all “ I think that we can’t go around… measuring our goodness by what we don’t do. By what we deny ourselves, what we resist, and who we exclude. I think… we’ve got to measure goodness by what we *embrace*, what we create… and who we include”.

I’m not sure who I will share this movie with, or in what form. But it certainly should be shared.

Something positive this weekend: I am feeling very excited and confident about a job interview I have Monday morning! Hopeful that my good attitude shines through and helps me land this opportunity!

    • I’ve heard of Chocolat and your post has made me definitely want to watch it! I love the quotation you wrote from it. So consider your sharing task fulfilled :)

Best of luck with your job interview tomorrow!

      Jo

  9. My favorite movies are Amelie, where Amelie devotes herself to making other people happy, and Tangled, where Raphunzel escapes out of her tower-prison and is full of fluctuating emotions of joy and excitement about her freedom to explore versus guilt for not obeying her ‘mother’s’ orders, oh yeah AND Lord of the Rings.
I’m happy that today included challenging and thought provoking conversations with good friends.

  10. Kara Thompson 13 years ago

There quite a few movies that I really enjoy and would say are my favorite. But I have to say that my all time favorite is Steel Magnolias, which is about the true meaning of friendship, Friends who are accepting of each other flaws and quirks, who stand at each others side in good times and bad, are able to joke and poke fun at one another and allow each to just be themselves.but is quick to know when the other is just “full of it”, and when needed give one a slap for a reality check.

The positive of my day is that I have been able to spend it outside on this beautiful day playing and being active with my dog. And as the day is not over yet, the best iI believe is yet come.

  11. What Is Your Favorite Movie? And Why?

I can remember three- “When Harry met Sally” fm Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal becouse it shows how a friendship of a man and woman slowly turns into love on a base of funny events but is full of so lively and lovely scenes, always cheers me up with tears in my eyes

Second one is “eighth day”, a french movie, it is about a friendship between a man and a boy with down sendrome, I have watched it with my cousins three times and at all of them we were burst into tears, such a heart feeling story.

Amelie of course is again a very encouraging and entertaining/teaching story- I suggest to everyone, also the music is awesome

Share you favorite movie with someone

I plan to find “eighth day” and make sure I give to my two best friends and then make a meeting to discuss together

    Positive thing today

Did some reading about personal improvement

    • I also love When Harry Met Sally! I watched it for the first time a few months ago and me and my sister both enjoyed it a lot! So funny and so romantic in the end. And I love Meg Ryan ;) Haven’t seen “eighth day” but it sounds like a beautiful story. Have you seen The Diving Bell and The Butterfly? It’s similar, also a French film about a man who becomes paralysed and can only blink one eye but manages to write a book. It’s truly a story of courage and strength and the power of the imagination.
Thanks for sharing your films, it’s made me want to watch When Harry Met Sally again!

      • Hi Jo!
Thank for your reply, it is so nice to hear that someone else shares the same joy with me for “When Harry met Sally”
I strongly recommend The eigthth day, the starring actors are Daniel Auteuil and Pascal Duquenne, really a heart touching story. I appreciate for yr recommendation, i will find this movie and watch certainly thanks again for yr sharing!

this makes a certain positivity in my day, getting a nice reply and a very nice movie recommendation!

  12. Oooooh this is a toughie. I’m going to write about my favourite movie of the moment which is The Blindside – with Sandra Bullock. This is based on a true story about a lady who takes in a child who then goes on to be a famous football star (American). I loved it because I aspire to be like her in so many ways; I hope to foster/ maybe adopt when I’m a bit older. It’s heartwarming, and makes you cry, but shows you the good that is inherent in all of us. Definitely recommended.

Positives today: had a quick read of some of the posts and re-discovered The Secret – I watched 20 mins of the video on Youtube (free!) and re-read some stuff about it. I got super excited about it again – realising how much of the power of our own lives is in our own hands – and feel very excited for my future. It’s been a fantastic day.

  13. Well, I have a LOT of favorite movies and I can’t pick one. I’ll try to list a few with the reasons I like them:

Lord of the Rings The story, the characters, the acting, the direction and everything in this movie is perfect & amazing. I just love it.

The Painted Veil The doctor loved his wife unconditionally and that’s what true love is in my opinion.

UP Its funny, cute and inspiring at the same time. It shows how age doesn’t matter when it comes to fulfilling dreams.

Inception I found it very fascinating. There is no limit for imagination.

Yes man It made me realize that unconsciously I have said ‘NO’ to too many things in life, and I have lost many great & lovely opportunities & moments because of the ‘NO’. I should say ‘YES’ more.

Share your favorite movie with someone

I don’t have anybody to share these movies at the moment. All my family members and friends have already seen them. So, I would like to say that if anybody reads my comment here, take these movies as my personal recommendations to you and watch them if you haven’t. :p

Identify at least one positive thing about my day I had a long chat with two of my dearest friends after a long time.

  14. The Goonies – Goonies never say die :) Friendship, perseverance, acceptance.
Poitives – letting off fireworks at my dad’s house (and the excitement it bought to my daughter), catching up with my dad, laughing til it hurt

  15. This is a hard one…
I have two favourite movies. The first one is “The Shawshank Redemption”. It is such a beautiful movie about friendship and life. The ending is beautiful, I can´t help but smile and cry every time I see this movie. There are many memorable quotes, this is one of my favourite ones:

“Sometimes it makes me sad, though, Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright and when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice, but still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty now that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.”

My other favourite movie is “The Dark Kinght”. The performance is epic, the soundtrack is beautiful and the whole movie is just amazing. But I just love the ending:

James Gordon Jr.: Why’s he running, Dad?

Lt. James Gordon: Because we have to chase him.

James Gordon Jr.: He didn’t do anything wrong.

Lt. James Gordon: Because he’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we’ll hunt him because he can take it. Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

As for the second part, I´ve already shared these movies with my family and best friends. My brother and I have actually watched them together at least three times.

The positive thing today: I finished the book I started reading yesterday. I was so good I spent all day today reading it and I had a great time!

  16. My All time Fav MOvie .. ALWAYS AND ALWAYS.. ONE AND ONLY..TITANIC!!!!!! So excited about the re-release in 3D. I have always wanted to watch it on the big screen

Why its my Fav.. One, because its a time capsule for me, brings me back my growing up years. So NOSTALGIC!!… Two, because its the greatest love story ever.. I dont think i have ever been so excited about a movie like i have been for Titanic. Three, Ofcourse.. Leonardo Di Caprio.. Gosh! I had a such a huge crush on him

Cant help it , but also want to mention my second fav movie : The Dark Knight.. Ever heard of a movie where you like the villain more than the hero??!!!

  17. A few top movies for me were (1) The Big Chill from 1983 which portrays a group of friends who are all very different but love and support each other for who each of them really is deep inside. (2) Matchpoint which portrays the role of luck in our lives. We can try to control our destiny, but a stroke of luck, either good or bad, can change our entire future. (3) and for mindless fun entertainment ant laughs — The Hangover.

A positive thing for today was that I got the oil changed in my car. I feel satisfied that I accomplished one more chore, so there is one less chore on my list to do.

  18. Bilal Kamoon 13 years ago

My all-time favorite movie is The Illusionist, it’s not a motivational or inspirational movie (well it depends on how you look at it), but I fell in love with its brilliant plot, you have to watch it to know what I’m talking about.

I’ve already convinced most of my close friends to watch it, and now I recommend it to all my friends here at Personal Excellence.

Today, I have attended a “Shoot as you walk” event, the title is self-descriptive, we went into allies I’ve never been to before although it were right next to where I live. In short, I had such a great time and you can see the photos I took here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2731417088375.2117700.1345688671&type=1&l=0a6cb97343

  19. Shing Huei 13 years ago

There are a lot of movies that I love. One of my all time favorite being How to Train Your Dragon. I have watched the movie several times and still find it greatly inspiring. It’s great to see how love and care can change so vastly a situation – to the extent that one can change a foe to the best of friend. The story started off with the Vikings hunting the dragons as they saw the dragon as their mortal enemies. The main characters for this movie are an initially timid child and the most feared dragon. Things started to change when the child helped the injured dragon, allowing the dragon to fly again. From that point onwards, they needed each other. From enemies, they gradually became the best partners and take care of each other. In the end, after a series of circumstances, the Vikings and the dragons became friends and live harmoniously together. It’s simply amazing.

    Positive things for the day:
Wonderful basketball session with my favorite people
Dinner afterwards where we chatted and joked and laughed to our hearts’ extent
The very simple fact that I get to be spend time with my favorite people

  20. Yes at the end it ws nice bt most of it is sad

  21. This is hard for me as I have lots of favorite movies for different reasons. Saving Private Ryan, The Hangover, Twilight. True love, funny and commitment:)

Positive – Another “Date Night”, enjoyed our wine tasting, and ended with warm chocolate chip cookies and a Bailey’s and coffee–Yummo!

  22. O I love movies, literally :) And there are a lot of beautiful and inspiring movies that I’ve seen, movies that have left a mark on me and have given me the wish to look at them over and over again. But I think the most inspiring movie and documentary that I’ve seen is The Secret. It fills me with hope positivity and inspiration.

The positive thing about today was that I hogged my father :D and even though I had a down day I was up again by this blog :) Thank you for being.

  23. Shawshank redemption- read it as one of the best movies according to the comments bt its utterly depressing!…jst watcht it

    • Yes, while it was somewhat depressing, you have to admit that there was a heart warming ending.

    • This is my favourite movie in the whole entire world! I didn´t really find this movie depressing actually and the ending is so beautiful

  24. My favorite movie is going to be have to be Forrest Gump.

At time I wish I had the mental attitude like Forrest when it came to life. He never let anything bother him. When the kids were teasing him as a child, into high school, it don’t bother him. He just wanted to sit in an empty seat on the bus to school (that’s when he heard the most sweetest voice in the whole wide world). Or even when his girl would run around with other negative people, or be put in not so good situations (her dream came true, she was a folk singer), he still loves her and want her to marry him. He runs into fortune, but it never went to his head (he cut the grass for free). Or when he gets to visit the President of the United States, it’s not that he get’s to meet the president again, (The best thing about meeting the President is the food! Now since it was all free, and I wasn’t hungry but thirsty, I must’ve drank me fifteen Dr. Peppers.) And when finally when Jenny is sick (what, do you have a cough due to cold? I’ll take care of you if you’re sick…), he was with her to the very end on Saturday morning…

My best friend says I watch this movie way too much. I know I have. I might have seen this movie over 100 times now. I will quote things from the movie to my friend and she laughs. And tells me that I’m not right.

Like the other day when I had my doctors appointment to find my results. She wanted to be there on the phone with me. Supporting me, but she had plans she could not break. I told her I was going to be fine. All I needed to know that you were thinking about me. And I pulled the quote from the move when Jenny and Forrest were talking about Vietnam, running across the country… She said “I wish I could have been there with you.” I said, ” you were…”

Several months ago, we were on the topic of the perfect soul mate, or the concept of the “one” out there for you. In the movie they were talking about destiny, but I melted the two. “I don’t know if we each have a soul mate, or if we are all floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but i, I think maybe it’s both. Maybe both things happening at the same time.” I told her it might be a combination of both. There might be the one out there, but then there are other guys out floating around accidental like. But if you force yourself to find this one guy, you will miss the chance of him just running into you. People are like a box of chocolate, you never know what you are going to get. I told her that you don’t need to search for him. He will find you. I told her all those qualities and values that you have, any man would be honored to have you by his side. There are many guys out there that will appreciate you, and he will find you. You just have to be open for an invite to a cup of White chocolate mocha coffee from Starbucks if he asks you…

Anyway this is just a small part of why I love the movie Forrest Gump. I could jabber on like a monkey in a tree on this topic….

Positive thing for me today…. Hmm this is sad, but I’m going on a business trip tomorrow, and I’m packing up for it. I get to be away from the home. I need the alone time. Time to reflect, time to think about the future, and time to come up with a plan of actions for when I come back home. How we will finally start the separation process.

  25. I have two VERY favorites and honestly cannot choose between the two.

The first one is “Ya Ya Sisterhood” – it is a movie about three very close friends who grew up together and stayed close throughout their entire adulthood. Although each has their own “issues” they remain strong for each other and do not judge.

The second one is “Titanic” – I love all things “vintage” and I love seeing the fashions of that era, the pride that was taken in architecture and of course, the love story.

The positive part of my day? I completed composing, printing and addressing envelopes for what I lovingly call my “MS Walk Campaign”. I was diagosed with MS when I was 39 and since then I have participated in the annual Walk that takes place every April. Those that formed my first walk team are still walking with me today – this will be our 18th!! Walk  Through the support that I receive from family, friends and coworkers, I have been one of the top fund raisers each year. While my condition is not as extreme as it is for so many, I am driven to raise this money in the hopes that there will be a cure for this devistaing disease in the very near future.

I so love this challenge and am looking forward to day number five. Wishing everyone who has taken on this “journey” a wonderful day – smiles.

  26. Like other people who have commented I do not have a favourite movie and I do not watch many either. However, I feel that I still need to comment as it is part of the challenge.
Movies that I have enjoyed and that have resonated with me, I’m not sure why, are the following:
The Deer Hunter – don’t remember it that well, and haven’t seen it for years, but it was a favourite for many years after I saw it, several times
Tree of Life – for the cosmic wonder
Mama Mia – the ‘feelgood’ factor and the scene with mum and daughter together as she reminisces about when she was small. The closeness and the bond – always moves me to tears as it is so poignant.

Today’s positives: sunshine after the rain is good and a skype with my son (missing him very much)

  27. My positive thought for today is that I had a great time with my granddaughter yesterday, and I actually had the strengh & good health to hold up & have fun for the full five hours that she was here! That was my frustration for yesterday…that I didn’t think I had the good health to hold up to watching my grandchildren! This program is definitely helping!

  28. I loved Field of Dreams because it showed if you have enough faith to work at what you believe in, it can happen. Kinda like “goal setting incentive”!

  29. My favourite movie for my whole life has been The Sting. A movie I go back to countless times, though, is The Game.

Positive thing: I’m starting to feel excited about my life again.

    • So glad you are starting to feel excited about your life again, Jade! I am about mine too!!!

  30. At the risk of being seriously uncool, but wanting to be totally honest, my favourite all time film is . . . . . . . The Sound of Music.

I first saw it when I was about 9 years old and the impact it had on me has stayed for life! I wanted to be Maria (the willful ‘disobedient’ nun who is nanny to a widower’s children and ends up marrying him) and I also wanted to be all the children as I loved all the singing and dancing. I thought it was a brilliant story – it had everything: humour, heartbreak, adventure, anti-fascism, brilliant singing and dancing and a happy ending. Bliss!

Alas, my children (now adult) were not impressed, but they have enjoyed other favourites of mine, including Mary Poppins and Mamma Mia and anything starring Fred and Ginger.

Have you guessed that I love musicals? I have often tried to foist my favourite film onto my unsuspecting friends, with little success unfortunately. Now it’s time to try again – heh, heh, heh!

One positive thing about today is that my husband and I have planted a very pretty little cherry tree in our garden, and amazingly, we both agreed on the right place to plant it!

    • I love your choice of favourite film, even if it is uncool! it’s great with catchy songs! thanks for spreading the musical love :)
