What Is Your Favorite Movie? And Why?

Cinema

While we’re on the topic of movies, check out the following PE articles on inspiring movies:

Your Task:

  1. Reflect and answer today’s question(s). Write as few or as many words as needed to fully express yourself.
  2. Share your favorite movie with someone.
    • Think of someone in your life who may enjoy (or even benefit from) this movie.
    • Now, share this movie with him/her, whether by way of a verbal recommendation, by lending him/her your DVD/VCD (if you have it), by buying a copy for him/her (if you want to), or even inviting him/her over to watch the movie together in the upcoming weekend.
    • The point of this is to share the love and joy you’ve experienced from this movie with someone else. He/she may well be inspired by it in the same way as you have.
  3. Identify at least one positive thing about your day. It may be something small or something big – as long as you deem it as something positive, it counts. If you have more than 1 thing to share, then by all means, go for it!

Share Your Answers!

After you are done, share your answers in the comments area!

If you’re doing this at the start of the day, you can post your answer for today’s question first, then work on your positivity task throughout the day, then return at the end of the day to share your results for your positivity task and your end-of-day positive reflection.

Check out other participants’ answers. Pick 1-2 participants’ answers and make a meaningful reply to them. Engage in the discussions. This is a group course, so let’s support each other in these 21 days!

  1. My favorite movie would have to be American History X. I love movies that have enough shock value to maybe help people change. Blood Diamond would be another great example of this. It might not help everyone change the way they view certain things but no harm in trying.

One postive thing today was it was VERY relaxing. I got to spend time with my family and just hang out. I got to work on a couple of craft projects.

  2. What Is Your Favorite Movie? And Why?

Wall-E. This somewhat dsytopic (and cute) movie is a reminder for us to live a purposeful life, even though there may be pain or difficulties in the process. This is much better than living an aimless, hedonistic life like what the humans in the movie do by being completely reliant on the automated system on the ship itself. I also believe that true joy and happiness comes from the pursuit of worthwhile goals and dreams, and not through endless instant fun and pleasures.

Identify at least one positive thing about your day.

Took a long walk in the afternoon and it was a refreshing experience!

  3. What is my fave movie? and Why?

:p My fave movie would have to be It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). It was about a George Bailey who thought that life for his wife, his young children and the others he loved would be better off without him or rather with him dead, he contemplated suicide. But the prayers of his loved ones hailed an angel Clarance whose mission was to show George how life would have turned out for those he loved a lot worse off if he were not around and the lives of many others he would have touched became tragedy.

 I love the movie for what I would feel each time I watch it: hopeful (despite difficulty), thankfulness (that I’m alive) and a strong desire to want to make a positive difference in others’ lives.

 I don’t know who else out there would be even willing to look past the fact that is it being a black-&-white oldie classic and really be interested to watch it. I hope by sharing this title here today would get you guys to check it out and watch it.

 The one positive thing about today was spending a good part of the day recollecting & reflecting with some fellow catechumens on our journey to be baptized as Catholics during Easter.

  4. My favourite movie is American Beauty because of the way Lester Burnham ‘drops out’ of his fake life of pretence and starts to live a life more closely aligned with his values. Also the scene where he gets fired is hilarious, as is the one where he catches his wife cheating at the drive thru, and I love the way his daughter’s boyfriend films the plastic bag and says it is beautiful. I see the beauty too!

To me this film says ‘You can go your own way’, like the Fleetwood Mac song.

I’m going to see which of my friends haven’t seen it!

    • Me and my friend were laughing about this film today, she has seen it already. But I also shared with a friend who is yet to see it and I recommended she see it too.

The best thing about my day was going for a run in the rain with my friend and chatting about lots of stuff like positivity, spirituality and dealing with issues in life. It felt great running, seeing the beautiful trees and expressing myself.

My favourite movie is MEET THE ROBINSONS.It is so inspiring with a lot of powerful and inspiring messages and there are few more movies in english , tamil and hindi languages.
I will share it with my friends.
    Today’s positive thing is
    Enjoyed a lot today.

  6. My favorite movie ..speed…..one of my favorite movie. i like it very much which shows us not to panic in difficult situation and try to solve the problem as early as possible

positive thing that i learned today –law of attraction really works ! HOW….?
Yesterday my car met an accident while going to my work place. It was dashed suddenly by a cow hardly which was left astray. Before i could manage to stop a lot of damage had taken place.I had to go back to service center instead of my work place and a lot of sufferings….but i learned a lesson from it .

For the last few days i was thinking of going by bike instead of car as i was always getting late to workplace due to colleagues who used to come with me which was frustrating me more! so i used to think and tell them if i park my car at home we would go by our own bike so that i can reach in time, but could not do so!
And universe reflected to my thoughts in such a way that now we have no other option instead of going individually by own bike.
See, the power of law of attraction ! It can work by any way…so we should always think positively towards our goal-the nature gives you what you think, desire, want!

  7. One of my favourite movies is the secret life of bees. It shows us how powerful beautiful and strong black women n men can be. It also reminds me that we are all the same. We are all human. We all need to be loved and we all face challenges. I also kind of understood the way one of the characters felt overwhelmed by life. It all seems too scary unpredictable and sad and that is why she decided to die. I wouldn’t say that she was right or courageous to do that but I can relate to her thoughts. A beautiful movie. One positive thing abt my day was shopping for some food for my fridge.haha.

My favorite movie is.”E.T.”  I think I fell in love with this movie when I first saw E.T., the alien. He was so ugly, he was cute.  There isn’t an intelligent reason that I love it such as, “the plot was mesmerizing” or “the actors’ portrayals of their characters was Oscar worthy.”  No, I love it because it is the story of a single mom with 3 typical kids who find the meaning of selfless love through a lovable alien.  It is funny.  It makes me cry.  I had stuffed E.T.s and all kinds of memorabilia from the movie back in 1981 or whatever year it was.  And here in 2012, at the ripe ole age of 51, I still call it my fav.
My husband and my 2 teenage sons do not like E.T., but they are “dumb boys.”

The sun has not yet risen, but I have already experienced a blast of Positivity.  I spent time with my Savior. He makes each moment a gift.

  9. Gattaca: Amazing movie about fighting impossible odds.

Shawshank Redemption: I remember feeling like nothing was impossible after seeing this one

The matrix: Makes you wonder about the limits of the power of the mind

Up: My heart swells like a balloon when I see this!

Avatar: For the emphasis on the universe and how everything is connected

Alice in wonderland: I really like that part when the caterpillar takes about Alice not being the real Alice yet. Kind of reminds me of me not yet me but trying to be the me that’s the real me!! ROFL! Basically, I mean it reminds me of how I try to reach my full potential. :)

All Ghibli movies: I recommend them because of them because of the sense of adventure, imagination and childish wonder it gives us. We used to have that back when we were little kids playing weird make-believe games. I really think its is a good thing to retain through out our lives. (Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, Spirited away etc)

    …………………………………………………………….
    TASK:

Well, I’ve shared them here. I’m gonna go share it with a couple of my other friends… :)

    ……………………………………………………………………….
    ONE POSITIVE THING TODAY:

Today is getting better than yesterday!! :D

  10. One of my favourite movies is The Golden Compass.

I love the drama, fantasy and escapism it offers! The story is engrossing, I have read the book too – Northern Lights. PArt of the story is that everyone has their own Daemon, which I really think that this is such a lovely thing, I wish I had a daemon! I wish we all did! No-one would ever be lonely!
I’m not sure this is a film for everyone, it’s a child’s film really – nonetheless I am meeting a friend for lunch today and I will lend it to her!

This morning I ran 6 miles! It was great, I had worried that I wouldn’t be able to make it, it’s the farthest I’ve run for a long time! My average pace was 10.31mins / mile.
    I am happy with this!

  11. I can’t think of a favourite movie. I watch mostly hindi and american movies and I like movies with adventure, sci fi or comedy. Some movies I can think of Star wars, Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings.
Indian movies – romantic movies like Kuch Kuch hota hai.

Positive thing about today – it’s Sunday :D
Other than housework, I do not have any fixed plan and can relax, read a book and enjoy my day

  12. I could share many movies but maybe the ones that left a special impact on me are:

“Where the heart is” – it shows things can change, we can change, you can have a better future than your past, with efforts and faith you can make it home.

“Life is beautiful” – In the middle of one of the worst episode of our history, we are invited to see the little beauties of life, to see life with the innocence of a child.

    The positive things of today:
My husband and I talked about what’s be hurting us for some days.
I woke up much more positive
I am enjoying a warm tea and the sun is shining.

  13. I don’t really watch much of movies, honestly. In deed, I watch a lot of anime. :P

By going through the list of “12 Meaningful Movies With Important Life Lessons to Learn” from Celes, the only movie I have watched before is The Secret. That movie inspired me a lot. Until now, I’m still using the method in most of the situations. :)

In terms of anime, I love a lot of anime from Studio Ghibli. For example, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, etc. The movies express the inner part of ourselves, and talks about Go Green, stop fighting and wars. I feel touched every time I watch the movies, and it let us reflect back that we should stop fighting, take care of our mother Earth.

Today, I used the Pomodoro Technique that I learned from Sarah’s thread in the forum to concentrate in marking the test. Yes, I have finish marking the test in a very short time period! ^^

    • I have heard so many great things about it. My mom in law lives by The Secret

  14. I don’t really have a favorite movie; it is hard question to answer. But maybe the one that first came to my mind when I read the question was the animated film UP. It was a lovely message, this elder man determined to fulfill his wife dream. It is a lovely and inspiring film. I also liked Wall-E, because it is a clear call to the humanity about the way we are leading our lives and the damages over the environment. There are so many messages to reflect on this movie. I also loved the pursuit of happiness, with Will Smith, no words to describe this film, you definitely should see, it is an example of perseverance, love and hope. I will share this last one with a couple of friends.

Today was a lovely Sunday; we went to park with some friends and had a lovely lunch. It was filled of laugh.

  15. The first movie which crossed my mind when I read the questions for today is “The Pursuit of Happyness”. It was such a heart-touching movie and with a great life lesson: never give up, no matter how difficult/complicated things might get. I loved it.

I’ll recommend it to my best friend, I think I’ve done it already but she still hasn’t watched it xD

This morning, as I was writing some of my essays for literature, my mom came and kissed my forehead then she hugged me. It was a random gesture of affection, but it made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I feel so blessed and lucky to have such caring mother.

    • What a sweet gesture from your mother, it is so important to have caring people around us.

As for the movie, it’s one I should watch again, the lesson is timeless. Thank you and have a lovely day Lina

  16. The Notebook – a story of love, being together, being apartment –

  17. The Notebook. It;s the kind of love that I hope to have one day. Positive thing today was that I started shopping for my new apartment that will not be ready until July.

  18. My favourite movie- Forest Gump. Very inspiring movie which gives me different thoughts whenever I watch it again. It is an encouraging movie which show how good one life’s could be.

If I could recall the scene while Forest was running for his life, it meant something like – ……when you reach the end of the road, you could always turn back and keep walking, there should not be something like a dead end. Also, while walking all the way towards achieving what you want in life, you could still enjoy the scenery throughout the journey. It means so much to me to never give up on what you have decided to work on, though it may take more works and time to achieve it, well, one could always enjoy the process in achieving it, just don’t forget to look around and enjoy the “scenery”.

The next part I like about the movie is about Lieutenant Dan, he mentioned something that his brothers all died for being a soldier, fight for the country. He blamed Forest to save his life and that he has to live without his legs. The first time when I watched that scene, I thought that too. Why should Forest saved him? A man without legs, how could he accept it? Then only I realised, it was so fortunate that Forest saved his life, because of that, he did a great deal in the shrimp business and contributed so much to the community and inspired so many people. It is just so amazing how one’s life could be affected by them.

And about Jenny, she has her dreams to be a singer since very young. She said that is her destiny. Yet, while achieving her dreams, she gone through so much. To me, she has even lost herself throughout the journey. As compare to Forest, he did not set limit to himself, it is just like what he always say, “…..life was like a box of chocolate, you never know what you gonna get”….it is so true that you will never know what you gonna get…..so why set limit to your destiny, one could do so many good things, just like Forest…..

The music is perfect, blend in so well with the movie.
I like the part that the director blend in the history events in the movie too. To show what great things had happened over that period of time.

It was an amazing movie, I could not get bored watching it over and over again. It tells me what life is, inspire me to keep on moving, keep on walking, you will never know what you will get in life. Keep growing, keep living, life is too good to miss! and I feel so good now…..

    The positive thing:
    – had morning tea session with parents and elder sister. Had quality chat with them.
-committed to this challenge and wish to share with more people.
-decided to prepare the emails to the old friends.
    -listening to good songs now.
-prepare to do good planning later.

    • Woohoo, another fan of Forrest Gump!

I love how innocent Forrest is. Like when Lt Dan, asks him “have you found Jesus?” Forrest says “I didn’t know I was supposed to be looking for him….”

Or when he is playing ping pong, and the officers comes to give him the purple heart. When the officer says “As you were”, Forrest was going to continue playing ping pong. As he was…

Simple, honest, he is intelligent, and heart that will never stop loving.

  19. Majid Mushtaq 13 years ago

My favourite movie is “Blood Diamond”. It depicts the reality and based on true incidents. I love it coz it inspires the spirit of go forward in life to achieve your goal.

  20. my favorite movie has to be pretty woman.
i remember it to be the first movie i really watched when i was a kid…and it was romantic and sweet. the song ‘fallen’ has remained my all time favorite song since and the way 2 different people w such differing lifestyles and background can actually come together to love each other wo judgement….it really makes sense. so simple yet, the hardest thing to do sometimes…but it can happen :)

positive thing for today that happened to me: had a long heavy talk w the boyfriend but it ended well cos we took steps to try to make what hurts us not get in the way and best part is, a simple meal of duck rice like what we have every sun to end it off n there it is, no frills, reduced drama and a sense of peace. :)

  21. I do not have a particular favorite movie that just screams out at me. I however, do enjoy some of them:
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button- Man was born as an old person and grew younger day by day.
Red Eye- Woman who was threatened by a stranger on a plane to help assist in killing a politician.
Sherlock Holmes 1 & 2- Do I really have to explain this? ;)
Final Fantasy Advent Children- A movie made from the game Final Fantasy VII (two years later after the end of game’s plot)
Up- 78 year old man journeys to South America with thousands of balloons~ It’s so adorable
Hua Mulan- The true story of Mulan, and what she overcame for the war (a better version than disney, at least for me)
Avatar- Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.
    Harry Potter (1~7)- My childhood

And although this movie is not out yet, I know it will be one of my favorites: The Hunger Games. I am a huge fan of the series and I am looking forward to the movie, which seems quite promising.

One positive thing I did today: Went on anki (kind of like notecards) and typed in all of my vocabulary terms on there for studying.

  22. This question is just not fair! Only a rare few know for sure their favorite movie. Hmmm, since I have to pick one I’ll say “Look Who’s Talking.” I used to watch it over and over again when I was a little girl, I don’t even think I really understood it then, but I can watch it now and it still the cutest thing I ever saw…

I’m going to tell my best-friend to watch it since she has 2 small toddlers…

Positive for today is that I got some really great deals at the thrift store = )

  23. I actually have two favorite movies and I can’t make a choice on which one is my favorite out of the two because they are both my favorite for different reasons.
    1. Gone With The Wind: I chose this one because it is a classic and I love the plot of the story. I love Vivien Leigh playing Scarlett O’Hara. I absolutely love Clark Gable playing Rhett Butler. This movie is set in a tragic time in history, during the civil war. It does show the destruction it caused, especially to the Southern States. There is more to the movie though. It’s an everyday story of a beautiful woman that has to learn life the hard way and making cold decisions in order to survive. While making these choices in her life and during the trauma going on around her, she learned to be strong and help care for wounded soldiers. Also she spent her whole life thinking the man of her dreams was unattainable when the one she loved was with her the whole time. The tragedy in this is she realizes too late and loses him. However with her persistent, strong nature, it ends leaving the audience knowing she will pursue her dreams no matter what.
    2. A Beautiful Mind: This is based on a true story which I love. It is based on a mathematical genus that also suffers from a mental disorder that causes him harmful hallucinations and he can not tell the difference between reality and what is in his mind. This was during a time when mental health was not yet known how to treat other than shock therapy and dangerous drugs. He has a wonderful wife who stands by his side through this entire ordeal. It is a bittersweet movie because there was so much more to life he could have done if he hadn’t been living in a make believe world. Yet everything he accomplished, including a Nobel Prize and conquering his demons in his head is very inspiring. It shows that no matter what someone faces or how very bright they are, mental illness can fall upon anyone. Yet it was up to him to face the fact of having the mental illness and doing the very best he could with the beautiful mind he had. A very inspiring and heart touching movie.
My positive for today: My best friend and I took my two daughters to the mall and since it wasn’t that warm outside, we went to a place inside the mall where you can pick out a ceramic to paint. You paint it there. All you pay for is the ceramic piece and after painting it, the staff drys it and glosses it for you to bring home. It was fun and something different to keep my daughters from being bored on a Saturday. Not to mention, my best friend and I had fun and it was just great quality fun for everyone. I am very thankful for today!

  24. I have few favourite movies. I will choose Nemo, as he is funny, lovely and independent.
Few of my friends watched it and I watched it with my family as well.

I went to the beach today, bought & had lunch along the beach and read a book. Was really relaxing and kind clear my mind.
It’s amazing what the sound of the ocean/ waves can do.

I’ve set an online personal journal, to express myself to the one who hurt me so much. Hope this will help me to get better and heal really soon. I kind of hope that he will read it so that he know how serious this relationship was and how important he was to me.

    • I absolutely love watching Nemo with my two daughters. It is very funny and I love the adventures he comes upon. Reading a book on the beach sounds very refreshing indeed. Have a wonderful day tomorrow.

  25. My favorite movie of all time is “El Topo,” which means the mole, and was directed by the Argentinean director Alejandro Jodorowsky. Jodorowsky also starred in the movie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Topo The the eponymous character is a violent, black-clad gunfighter who is on a quest for enlightenment. Set in a dessert, the character encounters a succession of masters, who he must kill to realize enlightenment.

I saw the movie when I was in my early 20s and recently rented it from Netflix. The movie moved me for a couple of reasons:

!) I relate to quest for enlightenment
    2) the sheer creativity and originality of the film: think of a combination of early Fellini, Hieronymus Bosch, and the early spaghetti westerns of Clint Eastwood.

This movie for me was a parable of danger and difficulty of walking the spiritual path, as exemplified by an affirmation that came to me once: “I am dancing on the edge/ of challenge, risk and discovery/ In authenticity, I find connection/In truth, I am supported.”

Absent the violence of the movie, I’d like to think this is the way I’ve lived my life….

One thing positive about today was having breakfast with a dear friend whom I’ve known for more than 30 years. When we first met, she was 18 and I was 23, and we worked for an eccentric dentist named Stuart Kabnick in downtown Philadelphia. Our job was to mix toothpaste, ointments, and other products that contained Cabasil, which Kabnick claimed had healing powers. We worked in a small storage room — along with a hilarious campy gay named Roland. I eventually met Jackie’s mother, who was a kind of raw foods pioneer and one had strong opinions about diet. Emily in her late 80s is still strong, but fading. Jackie comes to visit her for weeks at a time in the New Jersey home where she grew up with Emily’s former husband and Jackie’s brother.

There was a time when I fancied Jackie, wrote her one of my best prose poems about visiting her in the mountains of North Carolina. When years later, I told her I fancied her, she very gently told me it wasn’t going to happen. Which, as it turned out, was totally. I relaxed and just enjoyed her friendship, even became close to one of her boys (now 17).

Part of the underlying dynamic of our relationship back in those days that I felt that I was senior to her, in a mentoring sort of way. Now, I’ve become less egocentric and a better listener. Our relationship has become neary peer-to-peer. We talk about everything and I am grateful she is in my life.

  26. V for Vendetta, Alice and wonderland because sometimes I feel everyone needs a wake up call and also I enjoy an altered imagination. Pretty my my brain summ

I went running in the snow

  27. Admist all the wonderful movies, what comes to my mind now is “Pay it Forward”….
Powerful concept..to pay our thanks not back, but forwards to light up the life of someone you hardly know or even never seen earlier…The plot is woven through the eyes of a small boy..which makes it even more special..must watch..truly inspirational.

Definitely gonna watch it again with my friends..

Positive thing of the day : Attended a live concert ….thrilling !!!

    • I also love this movie and it actually is a very inspiring indeed!

  28. Hmmmmm….I am not sure how to answer this. Shawshank Redemption I think. Such a fabulous depiction of varying emotions. it makes you think…and feel every minute you are watching it.

    • Majid Mushtaq 13 years ago

But i prefer “Law Abiding Citizen” over Shawshank.

  29. Desiree Garcia 13 years ago

My favorite movie… Gee! That is a tough one! I have so many. If i can just pin point to one movie i would say that it is One Fine Day. I love that these two strangers are put in a situation and have the entire day to work together as a team to overcome obstacles that completely change their day.
Beginning to end i absolutely adore this movie.

    Or… the movie Selena! (with J-Lo) :p

    • Majid Mushtaq 13 years ago

I havent seen it but i think it cant compete with “Blood Diamond”.

  30. Dilip Kumar 13 years ago

Well, first of all let me apologies for missing day 2 and day 3 :p . But hey! I had my own reasons. Anyway now I am back let’s get to the today’s assignment. :D

Well the only name that comes to my mind when you ask me about the favorite movie is “The Lord of Rings”.

This was my first Hollywood movie. I have watched the whole series for 3 times now and I never grew tired of watching it again and again. Every time I watch it I discover something new, that I hadn’t watched before. I feel a connection with this movie. It leaves you charmed, teary-eyed and with goose bumps all over, just embracing the astounding world of J.R.R Tolkien, whishing it would never end. I still remember the first time I watched it.

We (my gang) started watching it at approx.10pm till next morning around 10-11 am. I was totally stunned and into the characters. The entire movie is full of beautiful sets and landscapes.

Another reason I like watching it is the dialogue. I would like to share the narration between two main characters, which I liked the most and I remember it by heart.

Frodo: I can’t do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.

    It’s a must watch movie.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
Now about my day, Well I inspired a soul to forget her past, may the help was nothing/little but I helped her to vent out all the frustrations she had in her. It was something positive I did. Isn’t it? :)

and moreover I was working on an article for 2-3 days (for my blog) and I completed it this morning when I woke up at 2am :p . It felt nice to accomplish something for which you have been working so hard. :D

    • Oh, I loved LotR, too. The friendships between Frodo&Sam and between Merry&Pip were amazing examples of affection; all the sacrifices they made for each other made me appreciate even more my friends because, even though few are close ones, I know I can count on them. Plus all 3 movies were excellently directed and filmed :D Looking forward to “The Hobbit”, I’ve read the book some time ago and I think it will make a great movie.

    • I love the Lord of The Rings too!! I´ve seen the whole three parts twice, the first one at the cinema and the second time, I watched the extended versions of the three of them with my brother on the same day! Crazy movie marathon, but it was worth it!
