21DJC Day 11 – Out of Your 5 Senses, Which is the Most Important to You, and Why?

This is Day 11 of the 21-Day Journaling Challenge held in Nov 2011. The challenge is now over but you can do the tasks in your own time. Visit the overview page for all the challenge tasks.Empty book for journalingHi everyone – Welcome to Day 11 of 21DJC! :)Yesterday’s question was: “Who Do You Enjoy Spending Time With?“. (Read the responses.) A number of you immediately kicked off your answers by saying “Myself”, which I found somewhat alarming given the intent of the question wasn’t to ask you to “choose” between spending time with yourself or others. (Perhaps I could have made the question clearer when I wrote the post.)While I recognize the merit of enjoying time with yourself (I definitely enjoy my alone time, and I think it’ll be alarming if one doesn’t enjoy being with oneself), the intent of yesterday’s question is to make you aware of who you enjoy spending time with, know why you enjoy spending time with them, and appreciate them for being in your life. That’s the first objective. The second objective, which is more subtle, is to support you in making empowering friendships. By being aware of the traits that resonate with you, you can consciously gravitate towards the people who share those traits. This helps you to make friendships that support you, friendships that you bring the best out of you. This is not an attack towards introverts, because I myself enjoy introvertism. Neither is it an avocation to be an extrovert. Extroverts are people who enjoy spending time with others over spending time by themselves, while introverts are people who prefer alone time over social time. Whether you are an introvert or extrovert though, you can enjoy time with yourself and time with others at the same time – it’s not a mutually exclusive relationship.Yesterday’s question was about identifying who you enjoy spending time among people you already spend time with, not about asking you to choose between whether you enjoy spending time alone or whether you enjoy spending time with others. There will always be certain people we like to hang around more, compared to other people in our life. For example, I believe some of you enjoy spending time with the other participants here, during challenges. Who are these people we like to spend time with? Why do we like to spend time with them? And how can we meet more of such people, so as to expand our consciousness to greater heights? At the end of the day, such people help to bring the best out of ourselves. By consciously building these friendships, we create a powerful support network that supports us in our growth journey. For me, I enjoy spending time with people who have high consciousness. People who focus on what matters in life, and not daily trivialities and gossip. People who have a keen willingness to learn and grow. People who are earnest in their communication, and do not speak behind other people’s backs. People who pursue their passions and make the best out of life. People who give space for others to grow and don’t impose their beliefs on others. People who believe in working hard and are willing to work hard, as opposed to people who skive and try to look for the easy way out. This awareness help me realize why I feel drained when I hang out around lazy people who often complain, procrastinate, and gossip about others. It also helps me realize why I feel energized when I’m around certain people, because our energies rub off each other. Hence, I make sure to limit the time I spend with the former group, and spend more time with people in the latter group. Doing so helps me to maintain a positive, conscious state of mind. With that said, let’s now move to today’s question!

21DJC Day 11

For most of us, we are blessed with 5 senses – Sight, Hearing, Taste, Smell and Touch. We have a 6th sense that is Intuition, but it’s not in the scope of today’s question. Today, I’d like you to think about this:

Out of Your 5 Senses, Which is the Most Important to You, and Why?

Woman breathing

Is it the sense of sight? The sense of hearing? The sense of taste? The sense of smell? Or the sense of touch? And why?

Your Task Today:

  1. Reflect and answer today’s question. There’s no word limit – whether minimum or maximum. Write as few or as many words as you want. It’s all up to what you want to express!
  2. Share your answer. After you are done writing, copy and paste your answer in the comments area and post it there.
  3. Check out other participants’ answers. Other participants will be sharing their answers too, so feel free to read and reply to their answers. This is a group course, so let’s support each other in these 21 days.
Look forward to reading your answers! :D

  1. It’s definitely the sense of hearing!

I am very sensitive with noise and news! I get irritated and really frustrated when I am in a really noisy place. I just feel like losing myself when I am put in a really noisy situation.

Also, before anything, I generally get very emotional when I first hear something be it good/bad news, critics or complaints, etc.

  2. Touch. I am a very tactile person. When I’m in a shop buying something, I have to get a feel for it before I buy it. I also love hugs :)

  3. This is one of the hardest questions I’ve ever had to answer. Without sight, I wouldn’t be able to see my boyfriend walking through the door after a hard day at work, I wouldn’t be able to see my puppy or my sister growing up, I wouldn’t be able to see my future children or grandchildren. I’d miss out on the smiles of the ones I love, and the beautiful scenery when I’m on vacation. Without hearing, I couldn’t hear my boyfriend whispering that he loves me, or any family member for that matter. Hearing their loving voices means the world to me. Without touch I wouldn’t be able to hold my dog when she’s looking at me with such cute eyes, or embrace my boyfriend or a family member over the holidays. Touch is also very important to me. I suppose my sight would be the most important to me, though it would be torture to see those dearest to me and not be able to hear or embrace them. At least I would be able to see them, and that is of the utmost importance to me. Not to mention it would also be extremely hard to get around and live an independent lifestyle without sight. I think it’s the sense we rely on the most, and it’s the one that I believe is most important to me.

  4. For me every sence is a magnificent gift from God, but if I have to choose one I think the sight would be the most important because I think I couldnt live without the great world we live in, the nature that soround us:
    – The great dark nights with millions of little lights…!
    – The sunrise every morning, with those huge mountains we have in Mexico city, this amazing 5 minutes are a great oportunity to start the day saing thaks to God.
    – The tress moving their branches like dancing its almost fun while great, all of them in the same rithm..
    – The sea, that never gets tired of making the awesome movements, even if you just see it and couldnt hear the sound, it so relaxing and makes you feel how small and vulnerable we are.
    – The fortest, with all kinds of trees, diferent shapes and colors, birds, squirils, flowers of diferent colors forms and sizes, the river…I love going to the forest in the mountain, I´ll never get tired of watching around.
    – Sunsets…. so romantic…!
    – The snow mountains… couldnt be better…
    – I love watching my girls doing what ever, sleeping like little babys (the 3 of them are allready adults..!), or working, cooking, laughing, etc. Looking at them it´s a pleasure to me.
    – And I also love to visit museums, to admire the pieces of art, I love to see the architecture of Mexico city, very old, as well as the moderns buildings, Mexico is a city that makes you to love just watching around.
I thank God for my eyes….!

  5. The most important sense for me would be the sense of sight. I love to travel and I love to meet people, I love experiencing new things and there would be no better way to experience these things by seeing them. Seeing also makes me so greatful to all the blessings and beauty that God has made for us.

  6. sight is the most important to me because i love art, i love admiring all works of art, it’s one of the things i love more in life. i love admiring views, i love gazing.

First thought: It was ever the sense of smell. Whenever I smell something wonderful, It´s more than magic. Flowers, the sea, the snow, a heavy summer rain.

Second thought: the sense of touch. It´s essential to me to touch my boyfriend. At his finger, his face, his knee. Whatever, touching him just for a second gives me strength.

  8. Touch… or sight.

Touch is about love, appreciation, connection.

Sight is about non-verbal communication. It says much more than words.

Hear is about music… and people talking… But if I hear someone speaking, and cannot see him, I cannot understand him fully. I need to see how he acts, smiles, where he looks, how he poses and how he frowns.

  9. My most important sense is hearing, especially because music is one of the most important things to me. After that comes sight, because some of the things I see are just breathtaking and they really move me. Then comes touch, because being numb physically would feel so detaching and I really enjoy the relaxation and comfort physical touch gives. Smell is probably next, because I love the scent of my husband. Taste feels the least important to me, cause even though I love food, it doesn’t really effect my whole being so much (just the food/energy intake, and I’d still be able to function okay otherwise).

    1. Hearing
    2. Sight
    3. Touch
    4. Smell
    5. Taste

I have thought of this question numerous times before. I don’t have an answer for it. It is so hard to choose just one when they are all so important to me in their own ways. If I had to choose though it would most likely be touch. I can’t put into words why but I know in my heart why.

  11. My most important sense would have to be my hearing. I can’t imagine living without sound. I love music, voices, the sounds of nature, the sounds of the city and all the background noise that comes with it. I actually feel anxious when there is complete silence. I have to hear the whirl of my ceiling fan or the ticking of a clock in order to fall asleep and when I was in school, I always needed background noise in order to study. For me, silence is a distraction. When I consider the other four senses, the only other that comes a close second is my sight, but it is still second in comparison to my hearing.

  12. To me, the sense of sight is probably the most important to me. Without sight, I would be living in complete darkness, without any idea of what this world looks like. By hearing sounds, I can only recognize the existence of a being, but I would not be able to imagine what that being looks like. It is for this reason that I realize that protecting my eyes is important.

  13. Catching up with my journaling!

I would say the sense of sight. I pondered upon a similar question in the past and my answer has always been the same. When I think of it, my day is filled with the sensations I get from being able to see, read, watch and I don’t think I can bear a day without being able to do so.

  14. Sight is #1 for me. I love and am soooo grateful for every sense, but if there were one to keep above all the rest, it would be the visual capacity. Seeing carries me forward into this world and beyond. Well, seeing as well as imagining carries me, and can I believe my eyes, by the way? Sometimes, however, appearances are deceiving, and it takes insight to get the whole picture. Insight comes into play on a whole different level, and depends on inner vision.
This is a very tough question to contemplate. I became much more aware of what each sense offers, and how gifted we are to have the different senses. It is tough to chose just one. I am in awe of the miracle of the human body, and how it is equipped to express itself and process information.

  15. What a hard question. I can’t choose between sight and smell. The next important is touch, taste and smell. All senses are important to me too. How it is feel sense without touch? Like no hand? Must be easily injured.

  16. I had to think about this a little, because both sight and hearing are very important to me. I’m a pretty serious classical musician, and I can’t imagine not being able to enjoy music. However, it would be overall much worse for me to lose my sight. Sorry, to put it so negatively.

I’m a very visual learner, and I really enjoy reading. Listening to an audiobook is not particularly pleasurable for me.

I just love looking at things. Several weeks ago, we drove through New Mexico on a clear, sunny day, and I felt like my eyes were practically popping out of my head as I tried to absorb the gorgeous colors that just seemed to go on and on. I can’t imagine missing out on the colors of the changing seasons.

So yes, seeing is incredibly important to me.

  17. I think sight is most important to me because the most of who I am is in sight; my connection to other people and nature, my sense of place, communication, learning, art, exploring. I think living life day to day would be hardest without sight, as humans are predominately visual beings. It is the most enriching and irreplaceable sense.

Next I would list touch, as it is vitally important for a distinct sense of identity within space, safety, and for connection to other people. Hearing and taste would be third and fourth as the feeling of completeness from beautiful music and food would be terrible to live without. Hearing is obviously also vitally important to connecting with others. Finally I would list smell, only because I believe it plays the smallest role in my life day to day.

Having said all that, this exercise has definitely helped me appreciate all my senses in a new way!! Life would not be as rich without these extraordinary gifts.

I think the most important sense is sight, because i think that many things are easy doing in theory with words,so they are easy to be heard but they are difficult doing I’m practice so they are difficult to be seen becoming a reality. Seeing is believing :).

  19. It would be hard to imagine life without any of the five senses. All are very important. But without hesitation, I can say my sight is most important. Without my sight, I would not be able to read, continue learning or even browse the internet and participate in blogs and Celes’s challenges. I have tried listening to audio books before, but I found myself easily distracted. To read, I need to be able to see and to learn I need to be able to write and make notes. I am also very independent, and without my sight, I will have to depend on other people for many basic things, including travelling.

After sight, the most important for me is hearing and touch. Taste and smell would be relatively less important to me.

  20. Out of Your 5 Senses which is the most important to you and why?

The two most important senses to me are sight and touch as I am a visual and kinetic person.

Though I could get by without sight, I would rather not. I enjoy observing nature, my environment, and other people around me. Many of my favorite activities are visually based, I enjoy reading as well as going to museums.

Touch, on the other hand, I think is absolutely necessary to not put one’s body in danger. Touch helps us realize when we have injured ourselves and stay away from things that can injure us. Also, we can learn so much from touch. It’s also one of the more comforting senses. Who doesn’t enjoy snuggling up with someone (or a pet) and feeling loved? :-D

  21. Being not able to hear music is so unbearable….so hearing is important to me…I feel all the senses are important.. and I am grateful that I have been blessed by all of them…

21DJC#11: Out of Your 5 Senses, Which Is the Most Important to You, and Why?

First, I want to say that I’m very grateful for all the senses that God gave me. Each and every one of them serves a unique purpose in my growth journey.

When it comes to the most important sense, I think that most people will choose either sight or hearing.

I’m having a hard time deciding which one to choose since both are very important to me.

With the sense of sight, I can read, watch movies, appreciate paintings and photographs, and of course be able to complete simple daily tasks.

On the other hand, watching a movie without hearing the characters is lame. I prefer listening to a movie instead of watching a bunch of silent people moving around. Also, books and articles can be replaced with audio-books and podcasts. The sense of hearing also lets you listen to music (my favorite). I wouldn’t replace that for the world.

I don’t know about you, but the sense of hearing is definitely my favorite sense.

    At the end of the day, we have to realize that all 5 sense are just receptionists. Loosing them all may stop you from receiving new information, but it doesn’t stop you from introspecting and from sharing your ideas with the world. I mean that even if you’ve lost all your senses, you could always contribute by talking, writing or just communicating telepathically with the world (;

Without any hesitation it would be my eyes. There are important objects in my home that I would have a difficult time envisioning if I did not have my sight. Next would be hearing. Of course I don’t want to lose any of my senses but the eyes would be the ones I would want to keep for sure, if I had to give up my senses.

  24. I am going to go with my sight. My nose is always stuffy. Therefore, that effects my taste and my hearing. That leaves me with my sense of sight and touch. My sense of touch I would depend on more if I couldn’t see anything but in addition to feeling, you use your eyes for everything. I agree that sometimes, your sense of touch should guide you but for me I love to read so my sight is important to me right now. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t open a book a see the words. Well I do know, I would learn Braille. But, anyway for now I can see and my sight for reading is the most important thing to me. I love to see the look on my children’s faces when something amazing happens or the sun setting in the sky. I love to see my husband’s face when he comes home from work. I love to see the waves crashing into the beach. We really take all of that for granted until you start thinking that maybe you may not have that.

  25. For me it would have to be the sense of sight, because that is of the most impact to me :-)

Most important of 5 seances. Had to think about this one. I’ll have to say smell is most important to me
Smell brings back memories, good and bad. But I was consciously there. Smell also is very comforting
Aromas, that I enjoy that help me relax. I need my smell to taste all the wonderfull smells of the seasons
And holidays. I really am blessed to have all my seances.

  27. For me, the sense of sight is the strongest and I think creates the most impact to me.

I tend to register better when I can “see” it, that means I will try if I could to create visual images of things that I want to achieve. For example, recently I wanted to pass a certification exam which I strongly believe will be useful in my career, I knew intuitively I need to create visual images to sub-conciously tell my mind to work at it.

I think it helps but more could be done :-)

  28. Such interesting questions…

Of course i appreciate all of my senses and they all have a place in our life. Interestingly enough sight is not one of my most important senses. When I want to relax, destress, enjoy life I like to close my eyes and breathe. The smells of the world are amazing and all so very different. They can bring back precious memories, make you happy, transport you to another place in time. I love the smell of the ocean, I love the smell of the mountains. When my husband and I ride our motorcycle (on the rural highways in Montana) I love to sit on the back and close my eyes and just smell the smells around me. There are the pine trees, the lake smells, the flowers, the decaying leaves, it is all so comforting and relaxing. When we go camping I love the smell of our campfire, the grasses and flowers and the wonderful food we cook in a dutch oven over coals. The smell of babies and puppies never ceases to bring a smile to my face. My original hometown actually has a pretty foul odor, it smells like rotton eggs due to the salts and chemicals they harvest from the dry lake bed and process into everyday products, but when I smell it I know I am “home”, where I grew up, where some of my family still is and where many memories were made, both good and sad. I think I would be very sad if I lost my ability to smell.

  29. My sight is the most important of my five senses. While I am sure that adapting to the loss of any of the senses would be difficult, I think adapting to the loss of sight would be the most difficult. I cannot imagine living in darkness. This question made me realize how I often take for granted simple things like the use of my 5 senses; hopefully I can remember to be more appreciative of such gifts.

  30. I think for me, all the senses are equally important.

However if I HAD to choose one…I’ll choose sight. I’m more of a visual person.

I remember one time during my camp we went on a night blindfolded walk – that means we had to blindfold ourselves at night and walk (wherever our ‘trainer’ wants us to go). That time I was a little worried because that would pose a danger. Luckily we could whisper to each other if there were any obstacles in front. For example, we would pass on messages like this ‘Large step up two steps away’.

In actual fact, the exercise was supposed to help us build teamwork and not take sight for granted. All of us after that did NOT take sight for granted. We felt more symphatetic to the blind too.

Coming back to me being visual, there was another time during an Adam Khoo workshop they taught us different methods to learn harder words.

The one I can remember most is sight (breaking the words up and capitalising alternate syllables. for example: imPORtant), mainly because I learnt that I learn much better with that method.

I can’t imagine life without seeing things because that would be… devastating. I can’t imagine myself needing someone to bring me wherever I’m going. I can’t imagine myself having a guide dog. I can’t imagine people laughing at me.

In short, I can’t imagine life without sight.

But then again, I can’t imagine life without hearing things, tasting things, touching things and lastly smelling things either…
